I have been hunting high and low for a pair of high-quality, general-purpose scissors for a very long time. I trawled all through Amazon and Ebay on several occasions, looking at dozens of pairs of scissors but could not find the quality product I was looking for at a sensible price. One evening I watched either a television programme or a YouTube video (I forget which) featuring William Whiteley & Sons and the fact that they were very long-established and the only Sheffield-based scissor and shear manufacturer still in operation. Having a lifelong love of industrial history, I needed no introduction to the quality of Sheffield steel, which is deservedly world-renowned for its quality, durability and craftsmanship. I then found that Whiteley’s had a comprehensive website and, even better, sold their products directly to the public without the need to buy a wholesale quantity. Best of all, in these straitened times for all of us, is the fact that such high-quality, premium products are sold for a very reasonable price. I knew straightaway that my search was finally at an end and some birthday money from my family gave me the wherewithal to place my order. My scissors/shears arrived today and I am very pleased with them. The overall feel of the product and quality of its manufacture gives me the certainty that they will last a lifetime and more. I used them ‘in anger’ for the first time this afternoon and I now wonder how I could possibly have managed without them for so long! In short, a beautifully made product that I cannot live without and recommend unreservedly to everybody.
