WHITELEY AND EDUCATION

Whiteley’s is committed to supporting the tailors of the future. Our EXO shears are now the industry standard in tailoring academies around the world, helping new generations of future tailors perfect their craft.

The Savile Row Academy

The Savile Row Academy is a world-famous tailoring school founded in 2008 by Andrew Ramroop OBE, Master Tailor and Director of Maurice Sedwell, bespoke tailors of Savile Row.

Housed on Savile Row, the Academy provides a unique opportunity for students wanting to acquire the high level knowledge, skills and experience needed for employment in established tailoring houses around the world or to establish their own businesses.

The Academy’s training is delivered by highly qualified Master Tailors and focuses on the traditional methods of soft-structured hand-craft tailoring, and cutting and fitting in harmony with body shape for style, elegance and comfort.

Andrew Ramroop has extensive knowledge and experience in teaching pattern cutting, fitting and tailoring, having previously taught at the London College of Fashion for twelve years. He has received many coveted awards and accolades in acknowledgement of his extraordinary achievements; most significantly an OBE from the Queen, as well as becoming the first Savile Row tailor to receive the Guild of Master Craftsmen’s accolade for Quality & Service and their Armorial Bearing for Skill & Integrity.

On two occasions his apprentices have won the prestigious bi-annual Golden Shears award. Known as the ‘Oscars of the tailoring trade’ it is one of the industry’s most coveted prizes, where each entrant makes a tailored outfit and marks are awarded for technical skill – design, cutting and tailoring.

The Tailoring Academy, Macclesfield

Founded by Brita Hirsch, a Master Tailor and textile engineer with 30 years experience, The Tailoring Academy combines the heritage of tailoring training with key production skills and cutting practices and a modern outlook.

The Academy is the first UK training centre to offer the ABC Level 5 Diploma in bespoke tailoring; the programme was designed by the Savile Row Association and opens up an alternative route to the tailoring apprenticeship.

Approved by the UK Fashion and Textiles Association as high quality and industry relevant, the Academy delivers the practical skills graduates need to thrive in the sector. Acknowledging the unique concept, the CapitB Trust has agreed to provide grant funding to all students on the course, and the Textile Society recently honoured the Academy with their annual Professional Development Award, in recognition of the highest level of UK tailoring training becoming available in the North of England.

Hirsch gives her students the opportunity to develop industry-relevant knowledge across all areas of tailoring, with high levels of speed, accuracy, precision and consistency.

American Bespoke Tailoring Academy

The ABTA is currently the only dedicated program in the United States offering specialized bespoke programs in both cutting and tailoring, with a mission to preserve and expand the reaches of the fine art of bespoke tailoring.

Programs are designed to develop and nurture each student by teaching them how to perfectly pattern, cut, custom-fit and tailor a suit or garment completely by hand in an interactive, collaborative and hands-on environment.  Students develop their skills by learning as if they are a client having a garment made for themselves.

The ATBA was founded in 2019 by Marlene Franke, one of the nation’s prime Bespoke Tailors and an authority in custom-fitted clothing. Her passion for hand-tailoring custom-fitted garments has not only provided her with the opportunity to create luxurious custom wardrobes but also to educate the next generation of bespoke tailors. She is committed to educating a new generation of tailors, providing them with the skills and equipment needed to meet the growing demand for custom-fitted clothing.
