Happy Yorkshire Day!

We know we have lots of readers from all over the world so just in case, for those of you reading who are not familiar with which UK cities and towns belong in which counties, our home, Sheffield, is in Yorkshire!

This year we wanted to celebrate Yorkshire Day by acknowledging our beautiful county and its history. From breathtaking landscapes such as the Yorkshire Dales, to its world changing innovations, Yorkshire has long held a special place in society.

For us at Whiteley, Yorkshire Day is more than a date on the calendar. It is an opportunity to celebrate the place we have proudly called home since 1760. For more than two and a half centuries, Sheffield (and Yorkshire) has shaped who we are, influencing not only the tools we make but the values that continue to guide our craftsmanship today.

Some of our favourite things from Yorkshire (besides Whiteley Scissors & Shears and the people) are Yorkshire Puddings, Sheffield Steel, Yorkshire Tea, Pulp, Marks & Spencer, Football, Wensleydale Cheese, Arctic Monkeys, Yorkshire dialect, and more!

What is Yorkshire Day?

Yorkshire Day is celebrated annually on the 1st of August, recognising the county’s unique heritage, culture, and identity. It is often marked by community events, the flying of the Yorkshire Rose flag, and celebrations across many Yorkshire towns and cities.

The day honours everything that makes Yorkshire, Yorkshire! Its history, landscapes, industries, innovations, and perhaps above all, the people who have helped and continue to shape the county.

Sheffield: The Steel City

Sheffield’s reputation as the Steel City was earnt through centuries of innovation that transformed the way high-quality steel was produced. In the 1740s, Benjamin Huntsman’s crucible steel process enabled the making of stronger, more consistent steel, helping establish Sheffield as a world leader in cutlery and edge-tool production. Nearly 200 years later, Sheffield metallurgist Harry Brearley developed what is widely regarded as the first stainless steel. This breakthrough revolutionised industries around the globe and cemented the city’s place in manufacturing history.

These innovations attracted skilled makers whose expertise shaped everything from precision cutting tools to engineering components used across the world. Sheffield became synonymous not only with steel itself, but with the craftsmanship and technical knowledge required to turn it into products renowned for their strength, durability and performance. The importance of this is shown through our own products today, such as our 8.5” Stainless Steel Classic Kitchen Scissor which is consistently one of our best-selling products!

It is within this proud manufacturing tradition that Whiteley has crafted scissors and shears since 1760. Whilst the city has of course evolved over time, and the industrial landscape has changed, our commitment to precision, quality and skilled craftsmanship remains firmly rooted in the same Yorkshire heritage that helped us at the start of our journey.

A Heritage Forged in Yorkshire

Yorkshire Values

Yorkshire and its people are often associated with honesty, pride, kindness, and hard work – values that continue to shape everything we do.

With this, we believe quality should never be compromised. Rather than following short-lived trends, we continue to manufacture products designed to deliver years of dependable performance where we know every cut matters. Whether we are crafting professional tailoring shears, kitchen scissors, or specialist industrial tools, precision remains at the heart of our manufacturing process.

As an independent British manufacturer, we are proud to continue designing and making products in Sheffield, supporting skilled manufacturing within Yorkshire, the county that has helped shape our history for more than two centuries.

Yorkshire’s story has always been one linked with innovation. Whilst we are proud of our history and enjoy reflecting on it, we are equally committed to ensuring traditional British craftsmanship continues to thrive for future generations.

As manufacturing evolves, so do we. Whether that is through developing new products, embracing new materials, or refining our processes, we will undertake these whilst remaining true to the principles that have guided Whiteley since the start.
