More Than Fast Cars: The Engineering Behind Every Race
When the lights went out at Silverstone this past weekend, millions of fans watched the world’s fastest drivers battle for P1.
Every summer, thousands of motorsport fans descend on Silverstone to watch the British Grand Prix. The headlines focus on wheel-to-wheel racing, pit stop strategy and championship battles, but behind every Formula 1 car is an extraordinary amount of engineering.
Modern race cars are designed to shave milliseconds from every lap. Every gram of weight, every aerodynamic surface and every manufacturing process contributes to overall performance.
Long before a car reaches the circuit, engineers spend thousands of hours designing, manufacturing and testing components that must perform flawlessly at extreme speeds.
It is a reminder that success in motorsport is not simply built on the track, it is also built in the workshop.
Why Carbon Fibre Changed Motorsport
One of the biggest advances in racing car design has been the widespread use of carbon fibre composites.
Compared with traditional metals, carbon fibre offers exceptional strength while remaining incredibly lightweight. This allows engineers to create stronger safety structures, lighter chassis and increasingly sophisticated aerodynamic components.
Today, carbon fibre is used throughout Formula 1, endurance racing and Formula Student vehicles, from monocoques and wings to suspension components and bodywork.
However, manufacturing composite parts requires a different level of precision.
Carbon fibre cloth must be cut accurately before being layered into moulds. Poor cuts can create frayed edges, distort the weave or introduce unnecessary waste. All of these factors can affect both manufacturing efficiency and the finished component.
For composite engineers, the quality of the cutting tool is just as important as the quality of the material itself.
Small Tools. Big Difference
Much of Sheffield Formula Racing’s vehicle is manufactured in-house, from aerodynamic parts and body panels to structural composite components. The team uses advanced manufacturing techniques, including pre-preg and resin infusion. Pre-preg is a resin-infused composite material that produces lightweight, high-strength parts, making it a popular choice in demanding industries such as motorsport and aerospace.
Before our sponsorship and collaboration, the team were facing a few challenges, including relying on a single pair of ageing fabric shears to cut. After using our range of composite shears, their process was transformed.
Cleaner cuts reduced fraying, helping achieve better vacuum seals during resin infusion. Maintaining the carbon fibre weave became easier, resulting in more consistent structural performance and a cleaner cosmetic finish. Intricate trimming work also became quicker and more accurate thanks to the specialist blade design.
For students learning advanced manufacturing techniques, reliable tools meant they could spend more time developing their engineering skills and less time overcoming avoidable production issues.
From the Workshop to the Podium at Silverstone
That same season, Sheffield Formula Racing achieved something remarkable.
Competing against multiple university teams from around the world at Formula Student UK 2021, held at Silverstone, Sheffield Formula Racing won 8 out of 13 trophies, including the Overall Winner (a team and Formula Student record) which has only been won by one other British University previously.

These results reflected months of careful planning, design, manufacturing and testing.
