Sara Fay: Cutter, tailor and costumier for film, television and independent clients

From an early fascination with antique sewing items, Fay nurtured a passion for menswear, teaching herself from old 1940s and 50s tailoring books. Her mother ran a bespoke bridal shop in Glasgow, which sparked an interest in sewing; however she was particularly drawn to the heavier fabrics and wool of menswear.

Beginning her career in the trade as a junior tailor for Glyndebourne Opera House, Fay then shifted to the film industry when she was invited to work on the movie Cinderella and developed a passion for cutting.

Since then she has worked on a huge array of blockbuster films and TV shows, including Sherlock, Mary Poppins, Aladdin and Downton Abbey. In particular, her work as Head Cutter on Kingsman; The Golden Circle provided an opportunity to demonstrate her skill when creating outfits for cast members involved in stunt work.

As the film was set in a Savile Row tailors, it was vital that all the costumes were of the highest standard. Patterns had to be cut for the principal actors that were indistinguishable from the ones cut on Savile Row, even when adjusting for the stunt equipment. Allowing the cast to perform acrobatic fights, driving stunts, flying and more, Fay is adept at customizing a bespoke outfit to include extra room for harnesses and cables.

With an enviable collection of vintage and antique Wilkinson shears, Fay has been a strong supporter of the development of our EXO range, and has gifted several pairs to junior tailors working under her guidance.
